Target is ripping a page out of the Neiman Marcus Christmas Book this month, offering up a cornucopia of ridiculously priced items to promote the DVD and Blu-ray release of "The Hunger Games" on August 18.
According to Variety, the retailer is going high end (and online only) with a 14-carat gold reproduction of Katniss' Mockingjay pin for $999, a replica of her leather jacket for $349 and a poster signed by stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth for $699. That could buy a whole lot of vittles from Greasy Sae!
Though we'd never drop such coin for keepsakes that will likely end up gathering dust in the garage underneath our dad's Foosball table, we acknowledge that there are plenty of well-to-do sorts who will eat this stuff up, which leaves us wondering why the collection is so, well, small. Here are our suggestions for five more items that would surely cinch the odds in Target's retail favor:
Swarovski Crystal Encrusted Bow with Matching Arrows and Quiver ($500,000)
Nothing screams, I'm A Serious Archer, more than a glinting set of weaponry that looks like it came out of Ryan Lochte's mouth.
Peeta's Gourmet Bread Basket ($399)
Sample the baker boy's buns (heh), cookies and pies in this baked goods assortment hand delivered by Josh Hutcherson. Truffle oil and foie gras included, naturally.
Katniss' Tribute Parade Costume with Hidden Self-Immolation On/Off Switch ($75,000)
Literally be the Girl (or Guy!) on Fire with this exact replica of Katniss' Tribute Parade costume. Except, instead of Cinna lighting your fuse with CGI flames, this will be the real scorching deal. (Obligatory warning: Kids, don't try this at home!)
President Snow's Inedible Arrangement ($899)
Trust us: You don't want to eat or drink anything the Capitol's head sends to you.
Hunger Games: The Experience ($1 million)
Millionaire adrenaline junkies will rejoice in this near-exact recreation of the titular death match. Choppers will drop Tributes into the Appalachian Mountains, unleashing a horde of deadly foes, including tracker jackers, muttations and a smoke monster borrowed from the set of "Lost." (What? He's been unemployed for years save for that recent guest appearance on "True Blood"...)
